Grammy-winning trumpeter and Jazz at Lincoln Center artistic director Wynton Marsalis has called Marcus Roberts, “a genius of the modern piano,” and “the greatest American musician most people have never heard of.” Marcus Roberts grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where his mother’s gospel singing and the music of the local church left a lasting impact on his musical style. He lost his sight at age five, and a few years later began to teach himself to play piano. He had his first formal lessons at age twelve and ultimately went on to study classical piano at Florida State University. He got his professional start at 21 joining the Wynton Marsalis Quartet.
San Francisco Performances has agreed to offer opportunities to see Marcus Roberts perform Saturday evening in San Francisco. On the evening’s program, Marcus Roberts will perform works by: Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, W.C. Handy, Scott Joplin, Richard Rodgers and Jelly Roll Morton among others.t
