SF Giants and LA Dodgers

It had to hurt. You know? Losing 8-4 in your home opener? Against your biggest rivals? Dodger fans everywhere could be heard crying earlier this month when, opening their 2014 season against heated rivals, the San Francisco Giants, they lost 8-4. And then things got just a little bit worse for the boys in blue when the Giants took them in the second game of the series 7-2. It wasn’t a sweep, but losing two of three games – on opening weekend! – to your biggest rivals isn’t taken lightly. Ready to exact revenge, the LA Dodgers are now coming to San Francisco to meet up with the Giants in the second of six season series matchups between the longtime rivals.

A rivalry is defined as a competition for superiority in the same field. Based on that, the Giants-Dodgers rivalry is a classic one. The Giants-Dodgers rivalry is regarded as one of the most competitive and longest-standing in American baseball. Some even consider it the greatest baseball rivalry of all time. It began back in the late 19th century when both clubs were based in the New York City – the Dodgers in Brooklyn and the Giants in Manhattan. The competition continued when both teams moved out to California in 1958 – the Giants doing so at the urging of the Dodgers’ owner who wanted to preserve the rivalry.

While the Giants got the best of the Dodgers in 2013, winning 11 of 19 games, we’re able to give credit where credit is due acknowledging the Dodgers’ division title and their first playoff appearance since 2009. But now it’s 2014, and taking two of three from the Dodgers earlier this month showed the baseball world that the Giants are still a force to be reckoned with and we haven’t fallen too far from the MLB throne.

They say, “The longest odds in the world are those against getting even.” So, with that, perhaps the Dodgers should just accept the fact that like the beginning of this latest chapter in the Giants/Dodger story, the end might just have the Giants on top. (from CATS)
