DOnetwork Co-Sponsors Secretary of State Candidate Forum – And You Are Invited!

The Disability Organizing Network is pleased to join dozens of organizations working to increase voting rights as a co-sponsor for the Election 2014 California Secretary of State Candidate Forum in Berkeley, CA on Thursday October 9, 2014.

In the spring hundreds of people gathered for two California Secretary of State Forums – one in Los Angeles and the other in San Diego.  The events sparked a great statewide Twitter conversation. Why?…because the Secretary of State race is being called the race worth watching this year.  Democrat Alex Padilla and Republican Pete Peterson are the two candidates left in the runoff and the race is tight. Don’t miss our last forum, moderated by John Myers of KQED, coming to Berkeley on October 9, 2014. Don’t miss this great opportunity to meet the candidates vying to be the state’s top elections official. Join us for this free event. Click the link below to register for the event:

CAN’T ATTEND IN PERSON? THE FORUM WILL BE LIVESTREAMED AT: https://www.youtube.com/user/ucberkeleyevents
Use the attached ForumWatch Toolkit to organize a watch party with your friends and associates!  The handy toolkit contains:

  • Tips for how to plan a watch party
  • Suggested questions to get the conversation going
  • An overview of some facts and voting rights issues for background information and discussion
  • A Twitter cheat sheet so guests can join the statewide conversations and ask the candidates questions in real time!

If you can’t attend in person you can tweet in your questions for the candidates!

Did you know that one in four eligible Californians is not registered to vote? That our state ranks 45th in the nation in voter registration? That people are still being denied the right to vote because English isn’t their first language or they have a disability? This year, we will have the power to choose the person who oversees the heart of our democracy – the right to vote!

This is your opportunity to raise your voice and have a say in how California’s elections are run and who gets to participate in our democracy!

Please share the attached flyer with anyone else that may be interested. And if you have questions, contact votingrights@acluca.org. Before the event, for updates on the Livestream, please check https://www.aclusandiego.org/2014-california-secretary-state-candidate-forums/.
